God & Jesus: Jesus vs. Religions/Spirituality

6 Rational Reasons to be a Christian
December 9, 2008

As a response to allegations that Christianity can’t be rational, apologetics-focused bloggers at Rational Christianity point out a few simple points that any objective person has to concede are rational, or at least aren’t obviously irrational.

Note that [he is] not presenting these points independent of each other — they work together to provide a reasoned frame-work for Christianity.

6. Prophecy

Go turn on the news. It’s coming true. Israel, Palestine, the regions of the world coming together with one central government. The Temple about to be rebuilt. I’m not talking about the more vague prophecies of the Bible. The only response to the fact that the Jews went back to Israel is that they took part in a “self-fulfilling prophecy”. The Jews now want to prove the New Testament true? I don’t think so.

5. The Uncaused Cause

All natural things have a cause. Those causes are natural, so they have to have a cause too… continue ad infintum. Can’t play that game forever. There needs to be a first cause. The only non-caused first cause possible is a non-natural answer. The natural proves the supernatural.

The argument is simple, yet complex. I explain more of it in my Uncaused Cause article.

4. The “Big Bang” is Not an Answer

The “Big Bang” theory is supposed to be the alternative to the Bible. It is supposed to be the alternative to the idea that we need an uncaused cause. It isn’t.

Why isn’t it? Because…there’s no reason to think it is. The Big Bang theory, if true, proves one thing: there was once a large explosion. This theory includes no reason to believe that time began at the bang — it simply presupposes that it did. That’s not science, that’s blind, irrational faith.

3. The Historical Jesus

Jesus existed, pure and simple. Josephus recorded the existence of the one called Christ twice, once in great detail and once in passing as the brother of James. Only one of the inclusions is disputed. That means that one … isn’t disputed. Jesus existed. The only question is, who was he? Read the next point to find out.

2. The Martyrs

Eleven out of twelve disciples died violent, bloody deaths for the sake of Christianity. Paul died for the sake of Christianity. These are pretty persuasive guys. Why did they die? They saw something. They were convinced they were right, not because they wanted a religion for power — the religion they started was totally different than that.

The fact that the apostles and the witnesses died for their faith proves that they died for something they considered worth dying for. There’s no rational answer for why they did that except that they were convinced that their story, one of miracles and the ressurection, was true.

1. Nothing to Lose

This one typically upsets the non-Christian, and it is understandable. But the point is still legitimate. Christ taught non-violence and love. Christianity in it’s biblical sense harms no one.

With that in mind, I absolutely love my life. I am completely comfortable in it. I take pleasure in the idea of waiting for sex until marriage. I’m completely alright with that and, given the context of the situation, this makes the marriage that much more special for myself and my future partner. The same goes with other “restrictive” aspects of Christian living. I like it. If it’s not true, I will have lost nothing at death — but I will have lived a life that I’ve loved. It’s a net-win. With nothing to lose, you can’t lose.

Christianity can certainly be a rational belief, as long as one has rationally considered the evidence. We know that there has to be a first cause. We know there has to be a reason the apostles died for their belief, and it wasn’t power or whatever. We know that the prophecies are coming true.

It all adds up. Christianity is true. Christianity is rational.

6. The Jews took Isreal because it's their holy land, just like the Christians tried to do during the crusades. That doesn't make it prophetic unless your dead set on it being so, which isn't rational.

5. I'm fine with.

4. The great about scientific theories is they are just working ideas to work off of until something is proved. The big bang makes as much sense as an amighty being deciding one day to create everything. The up side is that if it is proven wrong, scientists will look for a different answer instead of irrationally holding onto their disproven beliefs.

3. I find it interesting that you didn't say that the Josephus text that most scholars say is a forgery is the one that describes his life. Just because Jesus is mentioned briefly by someone not in the bible doesn't mean he's the son of God. There is debate that Achilles was a real warrior, but that doesn't mean he was immortal except for his heel.

2. What did the Heaven's Gate cult see that made them willing to die, or the Branch Davidians, or the people at Jonestown?

1. Buddhist, Hindus, and Wiccans could all say the same thing about their beliefs, that doesn't make it rational.
Not very rational

6. According to the bible only God the father knows the hour or the day of Jesus' return. Knowing this you cannot make a rational claim of end times now or at any other time since according to Scripture you do not have any idea when it will happen. Many people claimed to know the timing of Jesus' return and have obviously been proven wrong.

5. There may be causes that are yet unknown to us, but which we may understand in the future. The claim of the church that the earth is the center of the universe has been proven as being irrational by science for some time now.

4. The big-bang theory is an explanation of the beginning of our universe, but there may be other universes. The Catholic church has been discouraging scientists to explore beyond the big-bang since it would affect the dogma of a beginning and an end.
Genesis, however, cannot be a rational explanation for the beginning of the world.

3. There is a consensus among scholars that Josephus' record has been at least altered by Christian scribes if not forged.

2. Many people are willing to die for their beliefs which they consider as being absolutely true.
The ideas these people die for are not necessarily God inspired or even rational. Recent example are the 9/11 attackers. This is more a human condition.

1. I support the idea of Christianity being a personal belief system where believers should not persecute or be persecuted and accept other creeds as equally valid.
Sin

All have sin and are guilty before God. sin equals death and quilt that's why Adam and Eve hid themselves they were quilty. for those who dont take God as their Father it's sad because he loves(can you see the wind but its there just like God) you. We are just human and can't fully understand him it takes faith that he sent Jesus as the scarfice for all sin for every man you are forgiven. but men love darkness rather than light and don't want any ruler except themselves. but one day the world will get what they always wanted a world with out God when the day of mercy is over and all believers are removed and meets the Lord in the air. for the non believer
if by one man sin came in the world then by one man all sin is forgiven. the difference in all other religion
is that God presents himself as a Father to all and you don't have to do any thing to get to him but accept his plan for Salvation. if you believe that Satan in real how much more Jesus and if you dont believe that Satan is real then he has already decieved you telling you its okay to do wrong. if animals know when they are wrong how much more humans with a rational brain. the blood of Jesus cleanes you of all your sins we all missed the mark but in Christ we are seen as the rightousness of God we are justified because Jesus died for your guilty sentence. God is a god Love and of wrath dont get caught.

Read "A World of Difference: Putting Christian Truth-Claims to the Worldview Test" by Kenneth R. Samples. Samples presents Christianity in the MOST logical, rational, and reasonable way... to the extent that it becomes obvious that rejection of Christianity is utter foolishness.

As I sat in bed, I thought of how I hated to get up before dawn every day and repeat the same thing over and over again. I guess from an early age I hated any kind of legalistic rituals except for bathing and eating.
The moment you think you know everything, you know nothing.
It’s certainly no challenge for a rationalist/atheist to dismiss out of hand those who believe in God. The Christian, scoffs the rationalist, is weak-willed: superstitious, deaf to logic, incapable of independent thought, intellectually and even morally lazy. But for all his shortcomings, the believer possesses one thing the non-believer lacks: a clear, dependable context by which to understand, process, and experience all of his emotions. That’s not nothing.
